A merchant named Antonio takes out a large loan on behalf of his friend, Bassanio, provided by an enemy moneylender, Shylock, so that Bassanio can pursue the beautiful and wise Portia. When Antonio defaults on the loan, it has seemingly fatal consequences, unless someone can intervene.
