Dear Friends and Families of Our Lady of Victory,
One of the most common questions that humanities teachers at classical Catholic schools get is, “We go to a Catholic school, so why are we reading all of these stories with Greek and Roman gods in them?”
St. Basil the Great has a great response to this question in one of his letters. I used to ask my students recite it at the beginning of class, a practice that I believe Mr. Reinicke has continued this year, much to my delight:
“It is therefore, in accordance with the whole similitude of the bees, that we should participate in the pagan literature. For these neither approach all flowers equally, nor in truth do they attempt to carry off entire those on which they alight, but taking only so much of them as is suitable for their work, they suffer the rest to go untouched. We ourselves too, if we are wise, having appropriated from this literature what is suitable to us and akin to the truth, will pass over the remainder. And just as in plucking the blooms from a rose-bed we avoid the thorns, so also in garnering from such writings whatever is useful, let us guard ourselves from what is harmful.”
We should approach pagan literature just as bees approach flowers. Brilliant! St. Augustine called the wisdom that could be found in pagan literature and philosophy “Egyptian Gold” in reference to the gold that the Israelites took out of pagan Egypt during the Exodus.
So we can profitably read about Athena appearing to Odysseus as he makes his way home to his wife, Penelope, without compromising our Catholic faith. We can mine that text for lessons about how to live without also believing that there is an actual goddess named Athena who lives and acts in the world. We can listen to Socrates speak beautifully about the need to live our lives in accordance with the Truth, but we can discard what he has to say about man’s duty to the Greek gods. Or, perhaps, we can take what he says about man’s duty to the Greek gods and apply some of that wisdom to more fully understand our duties to Jesus Christ.
Both G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis tell us that Christ is the fulfillment of the ancient myths. What the pagans saw “through a glass, darkly,” we see face-to-face. There is still, however, plenty that we can learn from the great pagan philosophers and poets of the past.
To that end, I hope that you’ll be able to join us tonight for our next Fireside Classics event, when I’ll talk about Homer’s Odyssey. Perhaps more importantly, we’ll have good bourbon and plenty of wine. RSVP here if you haven’t already: https://form.jotform.com/260115533888057
