Dear Friends and Families of Our Lady of Victory,
Last week, six of our senior girls, along with their chaperones Mrs. Carson and Mrs. Montano, joined hundreds of thousands of others in defense of human life at the annual March for Life in Washington, DC. While the weather did not cooperate with their travel plans back to Denver, we are nevertheless grateful for their bold witness and their willingness to sacrifice comfort to come to the defense of the most defenseless members of our society. The March for Life is a beautiful, joyful, and life-affirming event, and it pleases this Headmaster’s heart to know that our school was well represented at this important annual gathering.
I have been to the DC March for Life seven times in my life, but I can still remember my first pilgrimage in January 2013. At the Cardinal O’Connor Conference for Life at Georgetown University that year Fr. Stephen Fields, SJ, a professor of Bioethics, gave a talk called "The Natural Law Argument Against Abortion." Fr. Fields walked into the classroom and wrote the following words on the whiteboard: Abortion is the deliberate taking of an innocent human life.
“That’s it,” he said, “You can all go home.” We didn’t, of course, and he proceeded to unpack the argument in much more detail, but I was pierced to the heart by the boldness and simplicity of the initial statement.
Abortion is the deliberate taking of an innocent human life.
What more needs to be said? That's why we continue to raise our voices in defense of the unborn every single January. Well done, ladies! It’s people like you who will, one day, make abortion unconscionable in the United States of America and throughout the world.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, pray for us!
Peace in Christ,
Randy

Parent and student access to gradebooks will open beginning on Friday, February 6. Parents and students will have access to both overall class grades, as well as specific assignment grades. The gradebooks will remain open throughout the semester.
While this represents a shift from OLV’s practice in recent years, it is a common approach across the Chesterton Schools Network and has been standard at most high schools throughout the country.
We are making this change for two primary reasons.
First, opening gradebooks promotes transparency and gives students and families a clear, shared understanding of academic standing well before the end of the semester. This allows students time to respond appropriately, seek help when needed, and take responsibility for their work.
Second, continued access to grades reduces surprises at the end of the semester and supports more productive conversations between teachers, students, and parents. When everyone has accurate information in a timely way, concerns can be addressed thoughtfully rather than reactively.
To account for the normal fluctuations that occur early in the semester, gradebooks will not open until the end of the fifth week of the semester, once grades have had time to stabilize.
I would also be remiss if I did not share a reminder that grades are not the telos of education at OLV. We aspire to something greater than mere academic success. It is full human flourishing that we are after. As Walker Percy famously observed, “You can get all A’s and still flunk life.” Nevertheless, we hope that this change will help you, as parents, work alongside our teachers to ensure that your sons and daughters are flourishing during their time at OLV.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
Peace in Christ,
Randy

Hi parents,
We will be having early release on 2/6, rather than a formation Friday activity. We have a scheduled speaker who was available on the 27th, which was when the early release was originally scheduled. To keep one early release each month, this one will happen to fall on the first Friday of February.
Apologies for the short notice and any inconvenience.
All the best,
Mr Reinicke -

Dear OLV Community,
Our next feast day in which we will be elevating the liturgy is Monday, February 2, the feast of the Presentation of our Lord. One of the ways we will be doing this is by using Latin for the entrance antiphon, the offertory antiphon, and the communion antiphon. English translations will be provided as a handout as you walk into Mass. In addition, the Sanctus and Agnus Dei will be sung with different Gregorian chants. This will be the Missa de Angelis, also known as Mass VIII. If you would like to listen to these beautiful chants ahead of time, please follow the links below.
Sanctus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehK1juwbtS0
Agnus Dei: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jln3fAv8ZBU
In addition, starting February 3, the Marian antiphon we will be singing after Mass will be the Ave Regina Caelorum. There is a recording linked below.

At Chesterton Academy of Our Lady of Victory, our students read great books that introduce them to great ideas. These works have the power to shape the mind, deepen the soul, and, in many cases, change the course of a life. It is common to hear parents say, “I wish a Chesterton Academy education had been available to me when I was my son or daughter’s age.”
With that in mind, you are invited to join our Headmaster, Randy Aust, for an evening where you will taste the riches of the great books our students read every year. Each gathering offers a guided reflection on a classic text, along with a lively look at why it has endured, what a busy parent might profit from knowing, and how it can spark conversations that bring truth and wonder into your home. No preparation needed; just bring your curiosity.
Bourbon, wine, and hors d'oeuvres will be served.
Our next Fireside Classics event will be on Thursday, February 12th from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Randy will be talking about one of his favorite books: St. Augustine's Confessions.
Please RSVP here, and invite your friends to do the same: https://www.ourladyofvictorydenver.com/fireside-classics

Come join the OLV movie club at the Burch home on Tues, Feb. 24th to watch The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), an adaptation of Alexander Dumas' classic novel starring Jim Caveziel and exploring themes of revenge, mercy, friendship and betrayal. You won't want to miss out on popcorn & a lively discussion of this epic adventure story led by Grant Reinicke. Space is limited, so please RSVP to clarice.burch@gmail.com.
Note: As always, parents should make their own prudential judgment about the appropriateness of the film for their students. (See here for the IMDB Parent Guide to this month's selection). All movies are selected in conjunction with Grant Reinicke and approved by Randy Aust.
