INFORMATION & UPDATES

  • Dear Friends and Families of Our Lady of Victory,

A hearty congratulations to Mrs. Ouyang, Mrs. Riviere, and the Class of 2026 for their absolutely fantastic performance of The Merchant of Venice. Our seniors have been hard at work since January preparing for the production, and the fruit of their dedication was on full display last week. Bravissimo!

One of the play's most enduring themes is the tension between mercy and justice. Like all great artists, William Shakespeare uses the particular conflict between Shylock and Antonio to illuminate a universal human reality that each of us encounters, in one form or another, every day of our lives. We long for justice when we have been wronged, but we ask for mercy when we ourselves transgress the law. Unlike Divine mercy and Divine justice, no human act of mercy or justice can ever be perfect. Our knowledge is finite, our judgments limited, our motives mixed, and our hearts often divided.

And yet, the human capacity for mercy is among the most God-like of qualities. Mercy has the power to soften even the strictest demands of the law. Portia’s appeal that "the quality of mercy is not strained" points beyond the courtroom and gestures toward a deeper Christian truth: that mercy, freely given, is not weakness, but one of the highest expressions of wisdom and charity.

In a world often quick to condemn and eager to demand justice for every wrong, the lesson of Shakespeare’s play remains as timely now as it was four hundred years ago. One of the great values of an OLV education is that it places before our students timeless ideas that help them navigate a complex world. What a gift it is that our seniors are able to internalize the lessons of William Shakespeare mere weeks before many of them leave home for the first time.

Please keep all of our seniors and their families in your prayers as they prepare for graduation on Saturday.

    Peace in Christ,

    Randy
